The Backwater Boat Trip

Anu could hardly sit still.
“Today is boat-trip day!” she said, smiling as she looked at the shining backwaters.
Meera laughed. “I know! I want to see the little islands.”
Before they boarded, Amma gathered the girls close.
“We’re going to have a lovely trip,” she said. “Stay with me, listen to the boat-safety instructions, and stay in the area where I tell you to sit. If safety equipment is provided or required for our trip, use it as instructed.”
Anu nodded. “Got it, Amma.”
Soon they were seated together in the designated passenger area. Anu looked around with bright eyes. The water was calm, and green trees seemed to float along the shoreline as the boat moved gently forward.
“Look!” Meera whispered. “There are tiny fish near the water.”
Anu leaned forward a little to get a better look, then remembered what Amma had said.
She stayed in her safe place.
A few minutes later, Anu took out her favourite little yellow boat toy. She showed it to Meera.
“It’s perfect for today!” she said.
Just then, the boat moved gently, and the toy slipped from Anu’s hand.
It landed near the edge and slid into the water.
“Oh!” Anu said.
For a moment, she wanted to reach for it.
She thought, I can probably get it.
But then she remembered the safety instruction.
Don’t lean over the side. Stay in the safe area.
Anu kept her hands to herself.
“Amma,” she said, “my toy fell into the water.”
Amma looked over and smiled reassuringly.
“Good choice, Anu. You stayed where you were and told me.”
Amma handled the situation while Anu remained safely beside Meera.
Anu watched her little yellow toy float farther away.
“I really wanted to get it,” she admitted.
“I know,” Amma said. “But a toy can be replaced. Keeping you safe is much more important.”
Anu nodded.
As the boat continued along the backwaters, she spotted a kingfisher near the trees.
“Wow!” she said.
Meera pointed toward the shore. “And look at those coconut trees!”
Anu smiled.
There was plenty to enjoy without chasing after a toy.
By the end of the trip, Anu had discovered something important: being safe did not make the adventure less fun.
It helped her enjoy the whole journey.
She looked at Amma and said, “A safe boat trip means enjoying the journey while following the safety rules.”
Amma smiled. “Exactly.”
The boat carried them gently onward, with the family enjoying the beautiful backwaters together.
