Ravi's Rainy-Day Adventure

Ravi liked walking home from school with his friend Arjun.

That afternoon, dark clouds gathered above the houses. A few raindrops landed on Ravi’s schoolbag.

“Looks like the rain is coming!” Arjun said.

Before they reached the next corner, the rain became heavy.

Whoosh!

Water rushed along the roadside. Ravi pulled his schoolbag closer and stayed beside Meera.

They soon reached the lane they usually used to get home.

But it did not look the same.

A large section of the road was covered with water.

Ravi stopped.

“We usually go this way,” he said. “Maybe we can just walk through.”

He took a small step forward.

Meera gently stopped him.

“Let’s pause and look first,” she said. “We cannot tell what may be hidden under the water. The safest choice is not to enter it.”

Ravi looked again.

A shortcut through the water suddenly did not seem like a shortcut at all.

“Okay,” he said. “Let’s find another way.”

They turned toward a nearby covered walkway. The ground there was wet and slippery, so Ravi slowed down instead of running.

Then Arjun pointed ahead.

“Look!”

A fallen electrical wire was lying near the edge of the road.

The three of them stopped well away from it.

Ravi stared at the wire.

“Should we go closer and see what happened?”

“No,” Meera said calmly. “We don’t know whether it is safe. We should not touch it or investigate it. We will stay away and get the right adult help.”

Ravi nodded.

He understood now.

The rain had changed a road he knew well. The water could hide hazards, and the fallen wire was something he should never approach.

Meera chose another safe route, keeping the children beside her. They walked slowly and carefully until they reached home.

Inside, Ravi looked out at the rainy street.

“I thought I knew the way home,” he said. “But today the rain changed everything.”

“That can happen,” Meera replied. “When something around you changes, stopping to think is a smart choice.”

Ravi smiled.

“Next time, I’ll notice the change before I keep going.”

“And ask for help when you’re unsure,” said Meera.

Ravi nodded.

The rain continued outside, but Ravi felt proud of one thing.

He had stopped.

He had stayed away.

And he had asked for help.
