My Family Fire Escape Plan

Let’s Make a Plan

A fire escape plan helps everyone in your family know what to do and where to go. Do this worksheet together with an adult, and then practise your plan.

1. WHAT DO I DO?

Tick the things you should do if you smell smoke or hear the smoke alarm.

☐ Leave quickly and tell an adult.

☐ Look for where the fire is.

☐ Hide under the bed.

☐ Stay low if there is smoke.

☐ Go back for a toy.

☐ Go to our meeting place outside.

2. TWO WAYS OUT

Walk through your home with an adult. Find two ways out of each room, and write them here.

My bedroom: Way 1 Way 2
Living room: Way 1 Way 2
Kitchen: Way 1 Way 2

3. OUR MEETING PLACE

Our family meeting place outside is:

It is a safe distance from our home, and everyone can find it easily.

4. DRAW MY HOME PLAN

Draw a simple map of your home. Use green arrows for the first way out, red arrows for the second way out, and a star for the meeting place.

5. MY FIRE SAFETY PROMISE

☐ I will leave quickly if I smell smoke or hear the alarm.

☐ I will stay low, use my practised exit, and go to our meeting place.

☐ I will never go back inside.

☐ I will tell an adult about anything that looks or smells unsafe.

Remember

Children never fight fires. Your job is to get out, stay out and tell an adult.

For adults: Practise the plan twice a year, including at night. Keep local emergency contact information readily available.
