What to Do If You Smell Smoke
Topic: Fire
SMOKE IS A WARNING
If you smell smoke, something might be burning. Always take it seriously, even if you cannot see a fire.
STEP 1: NOTICE
You might smell smoke, see smoke, or hear a smoke alarm. Any of these means it is time to act.
STEP 2: STAY SAFE
- Do not look for the fire. Do not try to put it out. That is a job for grown-ups and fire fighters.
- Do not hide. Hiding under a bed or in a cupboard makes it harder for people to find you.
- Move away from the smoke toward the nearest way out. If there is smoke, stay low where the air is clearer.
STEP 3: TELL AN ADULT
Shout "Smoke!" or "Fire!" so everyone knows. Go to your family's meeting place outside and tell a grown-up what you noticed. Grown-ups will call for emergency help.
NEVER GO BACK INSIDE
Once you are outside, stay outside. Do not go back for toys, pets or anything else. Tell a grown-up if someone is still inside.
TRY IT WITH YOUR FAMILY
Ask your family: Where is our meeting place outside? What are two ways out of our home? Practise walking it together.
