Look, Check, Play: Playground Safety
Topic: Outdoor & Adventure Safety
PLAYGROUNDS ARE FUN
Swings, slides and climbing frames help you run, jump and make friends. A few simple habits help you stay safe while you play.
STEP 1: LOOK
Before you play, look around the playground with a grown-up nearby.
- Is the ground clear? Look for broken glass, sharp things or rubbish.
- Does the equipment look okay? Look for loose parts, broken pieces or very hot metal.
- Is it wet? Wet steps and slides can be slippery.
STEP 2: CHECK
Check yourself, too.
- Are your shoes tied and suitable for running and climbing?
- Are loose scarves, long drawstrings or bag straps tucked away so they cannot catch?
- Is the equipment the right size for you?
- Does a grown-up know where you are playing?
STEP 3: PLAY SAFELY
- Take turns. Wait until the slide or swing is clear.
- Use equipment the right way. Sit on swings, slide feet first, and hold on when climbing.
- Give others space. Stay away from the front and back of moving swings.
- Be kind. No pushing, shoving or rough games on equipment.
REMEMBER: NOTICE, STAY AWAY, TELL AN ADULT
If something looks broken, unsafe or is hurting someone, stay away from it and tell a grown-up. You do not have to fix it yourself. If you or a friend gets hurt, tell an adult right away.
TRY IT
Next time you visit a playground, do your Look and Check routine with a grown-up. Can you find two things that are safe and one thing to tell an adult about?
