How to choose and inspect an ATM, protect your PIN, handle your cards securely in shops, and respond if a card is lost, retained, or misused.
Cards and ATMs are part of daily life, which is exactly why criminals target them. A few simple checks and habits keep your card details and your PIN in your hands only.
Choose and Inspect the ATM
- Use ATMs inside bank branches or in busy, well-lit places whenever you can.
- Look at the card slot and keypad for loose, bulky, or mismatched parts, and for small hidden cameras.
- Walk away from any machine that looks tampered with and tell the bank.
- Decline help from strangers and do not let anyone stand close enough to see your screen or keypad.
Protect Your PIN
- Shield the keypad with your free hand every time you enter your PIN, at ATMs and in shops.
- Memorize your PIN. Never write it on the card or keep it in your wallet.
- Never share your PIN with anyone, including people who say they are from your bank.
- Change your PIN straight away if you think anyone has seen it.
Handle Your Cards Securely
- Keep your card in sight when paying in restaurants and shops, and take it back right after paying.
- Prefer chip or contactless payment over swiping where the option exists.
- Turn on card transaction alerts and check statements regularly for charges you do not recognize.
- Carry only the cards you need and keep a separate note of your bank's card-blocking contact details.
Respond When Something Goes Wrong
- Report a lost or stolen card immediately so it can be blocked before it is used.
- Contact the bank if an ATM keeps your card. Do not accept help from anyone nearby.
- Dispute unfamiliar charges with your bank as soon as you spot them, and ask for a replacement card.
Make Card Safety a Habit
Inspect the machine, shield the PIN, keep the card in sight, and act the moment something looks wrong. These habits take seconds and prevent most card fraud.
